Throughout the year, we will work together to raise awareness about the cooperative enterprise model. The UN General Assembly encourages establishing national coordination mechanisms for IYC activities, ensuring that global messages reach stakeholders at all levels.
- Governments & Policymakers: Develop supportive policies and regulatory frameworks that foster cooperative growth.
- Cooperatives: Highlight your role in sustainable development, nurture leadership, and collaborate with other cooperatives.
- Institutions & Development Agencies: Promote education, capacity building, and international cooperation to strengthen cooperatives.
- The Public: Learn how cooperatives drive sustainability and support local cooperative initiatives.
Member States
Member States are invited to set up National Mechanisms responsible for promoting activities related to the preparation and observance of the IYC. These mechanisms should be inclusive and envisioned to be composed of local governments, UN country teams, cooperative movement representatives, private sector leaders, and civil society organisations.
UN Agencies
Many UN agencies work with various cooperative sectors and are positioned to add value to the IYC. UN agencies can contribute significantly in raising awareness, providing technical assistance and supporting national activities within the context of the IYC.
Cooperative Movement
Cooperatives across all sectors—including agriculture, finance, health, and housing—are essential to the IYC’s success, contributing success stories, coordinating awareness efforts, and promoting the IYC through various media. The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) will play a key role by highlighting the activities of an estimated 1 billion cooperative members
Academia
Academia can support cooperatives and the IYC by researching cooperatives’ contributions to development goals, sharing insights and best practices, and incorporating cooperatives into educational programs.
Private Sector
Cooperatives work alongside, and are considered by some to be part of, the private sector. The private sector, including Fair Trade, work with cooperatives as suppliers and buyers and can contribute as partners to the IYC by sharing information, joining national mechanisms, organizing training and development, and exchanging cooperative experiences.
Civil Society Organizations
Many civil society organizations (CSOs) providing social services often have close ties with cooperatives. Partnerships with CSOs could provide the necessary networks that could support the IYC.
Media
National and local media can assist in raising awareness about cooperatives and the IYC through press releases, newspaper articles and film documentaries.
